Katherine graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 2020. She is currently in her first year at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Katherine was inducted into the engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi, and received the Robert Edward Reiss Award in Chemical Engineering for outstanding promise in biochemical engineering.
In college, Katherine conducted clinical research at the Penn Frontotemporal Degeneration Center and the New York-Presbyterian Neurological Intensive Care Unit. Katherine was a teaching assistant in the chemistry lab and led a clinical research program at the Mt. Sinai hospital system. She also served as president of her Greek organization and was a pianist in a classical chamber ensemble.
In medical school, Katherine has already joined clinical research projects, community clinics, and interest groups. She is interested in pursuing a career in a surgical subspecialty. Katherine knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was two years old and has never doubted that decision. She shadowed several veterinarians while in high school and worked in a histology lab. While in her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Katherine learned about the field of laboratory animal medicine while taking a lab animal management course. From that, she became more involved in research in her department and completed a summer externship at the NIH veterinary pathology center.
On the advice of her mentors, she applied for dual DVM/Ph.D. programs and was accepted at UC Davis. During the Ph.D. portion of the program, her lab moved to the world-renowned hospital, the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN. She completed her Immunology Ph.D. there, during which she published six first-author papers in the field of Transplant Immunology. Afterward, she rejoined the class of 2020, where she decided to pursue a residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine. She matched to Stanford University for her residency, where she is currently training.

Katherine graduated cum laude from UC Davis in 2017 with a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in Managerial Economics. As an undergraduate, she worked as a research assistant in a cardiovascular tissue engineering lab and as a veterinary technician at Davis’s Large Animal ICU, which she still holds today. She has also worked in small animal and private equine practices, and she has experience rehabilitating and retraining abused horses. She has a passion for equine medicine and hopes to one day work in veterinary academia as a large animal surgeon and musculoskeletal research professor.
Katherine held many leadership positions in veterinary school, including co-president of the Veterinary Emergency Response Team, Student Activities Treasurer of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association, and the student representative for the California Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (CAVMRC) Steering Committee. Dr. Mercado is a board-certified ophthalmologist, bringing expertise in pediatric and comprehensive ophthalmology to her mentor and admissions consultant role. She has served as Clinical Instructor for Ophthalmology and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Casey Eye Institute, and Head of the Diversity Committee for the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington. In these roles, she has been involved with medical school admissions and ophthalmology residency and fellowship interviews.
Dr. Mercado’s passion for mentoring and teaching began early in her academic career. As an undergraduate at MIT, she was recognized as one of 25 Burchard Scholars in her year for her outstanding achievements in the arts, humanities, social sciences, science, and engineering. Additionally, she was inducted as an MIT Class of 2009 Community Catalyst Leader for her extensive involvement in mentoring, teaching, and developing advising workshops for freshmen.

Dr. Munoz played competitive softball for more than 10 years and still plays recreationally. She enjoys spending time reading, cooking, going to concerts, gardening, and training her doberman.
Dr. Munoz attended Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine before becoming a resident at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With over 10 years of experience in advising and tutoring students and five years in selecting, interviewing, and ranking applicants for medical school and residency. She currently sits on the admissions committee for the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Munoz graduated summa cum laude from California State University San Marcos with a BS in biology and a minor in chemistry after being recruited to play softball for the university before attending Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Her impressive performance during the residency application process led to more than 20 interviews in her chosen specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Ultimately, Dr. Munoz matched at a top 10 program in the country for this specialty, the University of Wisconsin, where she worked towards a fellowship in microsurgical reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Munoz's passion for advising and working with students stems from her own experiences and challenges throughout medical school and residency application processes. As the first in her family to graduate with a college degree, she overcame numerous obstacles in the preparation for and admission to medical school and residency, from which she learned immensely. This personal journey has fueled her desire to make the process more streamlined, straightforward, efficient, and successful for future students. She draws on her extensive training in communication, teaching, and leadership to guide students with clarity and confidence.
Dr. Munoz’s 10+ years of extensive mentoring and admissions experience have provided her with insider tips for the admissions process from the perspective of admissions committees, which she is excited to share with aspiring medical professionals. She takes a flexible and student-centered approach, adapting quickly to each student’s needs and adjusting plans as necessary.
