Dr. Duy Nguyen, Med School Admissions Consultant at Inspira Advantage

Dr. Nguyen is a psychiatry resident at the University of California, San Francisco – Fresno. He earned an MD from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, and holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in English and psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Nguyen draws on 15+ years of mentorship experience and three years of admissions committee service at institutions including UCSF Fresno and UC Davis School of Medicine to guide BS/MD applicants through the process.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Nguyen also completed graduate studies at San Francisco State University and post-baccalaureate coursework at UC Berkeley Extension. Dr. Nguyen spent over a decade as a high school English teacher in the Bay Area, where he designed curricula for multiple grade levels and advised student organizations promoting inclusion and cultural awareness. His early career as an educator and theater director shaped his collaborative, creative approach to psychiatry and his deep commitment to mentorship and communication.

Dr. Nguyen’s professional interests include interventional psychiatry, refugee and immigrant mental health, and neurodevelopmental disorders. His research has focused on cognitive control in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and the mental health challenges faced by refugee children, culminating in peer-reviewed publications and national conference presentations. He has conducted research with the UC Davis MIND Institute and the UCSF Department of Psychiatry, contributing to the growing body of work on adolescent and refugee mental health.

A published writer and editor, Dr. Nguyen has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP), as a columnist for MD Edge Psychiatry, and as a reviewer for Oakstone CME. His article “Hunted: Thoughts on Escape and Safety,” reflecting on the refugee experience, was featured by JAACAP Connect and later presented at Grand Rounds at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Dr. Nguyen’s leadership and excellence in psychiatry have been recognized through the Klingenstein Third Generation Fellowship and multiple speaking invitations. He continues to combine his backgrounds in education, the arts, and medicine to promote mental health literacy, cultural humility, and innovative approaches to care. Students that Dr. Nguyen has worked with have been accepted to top BS/MD programs across the nation.
