Before attending medical school, Dr. Nguyen also completed graduate studies at San Francisco State University and post-baccalaureate coursework at UC Berkeley Extension. Dr. Nguyen spent over a decade as a high school English teacher in the Bay Area, where he designed curricula for multiple grade levels and advised student organizations promoting inclusion and cultural awareness. His early career as an educator and theater director shaped his collaborative, creative approach to psychiatry and his deep commitment to mentorship and communication.
Dr. Nguyen’s professional interests include interventional psychiatry, refugee and immigrant mental health, and neurodevelopmental disorders. His research has focused on cognitive control in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and the mental health challenges faced by refugee children, culminating in peer-reviewed publications and national conference presentations. He has conducted research with the UC Davis MIND Institute and the UCSF Department of Psychiatry, contributing to the growing body of work on adolescent and refugee mental health.
A published writer and editor, Dr. Nguyen has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP), as a columnist for MD Edge Psychiatry, and as a reviewer for Oakstone CME. His article “Hunted: Thoughts on Escape and Safety,” reflecting on the refugee experience, was featured by JAACAP Connect and later presented at Grand Rounds at the UC Davis School of Medicine.
Dr. Nguyen’s leadership and excellence in psychiatry have been recognized through the Klingenstein Third Generation Fellowship and multiple speaking invitations. He continues to combine his backgrounds in education, the arts, and medicine to promote mental health literacy, cultural humility, and innovative approaches to care. Students that Dr. Nguyen has worked with have been accepted to top BS/MD programs across the nation.
