The Most Competitive College Track: What Is a BS/MD Program?

A BS/MD is a combined Bachelor’s and Doctor of Medicine program that offers high school students a rare opportunity: the chance to secure their spot in medical school now without applying later. As the most competitive college track, the average BS/MD acceptance rate is just 3%, demanding standout applications from high-achieving high school students. The competition is fierce—but the benefits are undeniable.

Challenge:

Simran had a strong GPA, excellent SAT score, and multiple AP courses to showcase her academic excellence.  However, she lacked the breadth and depth of STEM-related activities that BS/MD programs expect from top applicants due to her relocating due to her parents’ frequent job changes.

How We Helped:

  • Crafted and edited pre-college summer applications, resulting in her acceptance to the MIT Research Science Institute
  • Designed an extracurricular plan centered on leadership experiences in medicine and science, resulting in Simran founding her school’s STEM Club
  • Guided Simran in her desire to educate students on environmentalism as she set up her own nonprofit organization
  • Identified Simran’s best-fit BS/MD programs to align with her aspirations, preferences, and desire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon
  • Connected the dots between Simran’s activities, academic excellence, and desire to become a doctor throughout her personal statement and essays

Outcome:

Simran was accepted to 18 out of the 20 programs to which she applied, and ultimately decided to attend Brown’s PLME program.

FAQs

When should I start working on my application?

BS/MD applications take time to complete—you must create a resume, personal statement, essays, short answers, and support recommenders. Getting to perfection takes time.

How much time it takes to finalize your application depends on numerous factors, including how many BS/MD programs you’re applying to, your writing and editing skills, and your personal commitments.

Based on our 16+ years of experience in the BS/MD admissions space, we recommend starting at least three months before the deadline to maximize your chances of success. We can work with candidates as young as grade 6 to guide them on their journey toward becoming competitive BS/MD applicants.

What is your delivery model? Who will be my day-to-day contact if I work with Inspira Advantage?

Our project team consists of physician advisors and former admissions committee members. Our team consists of the nation’s most renowned experts, with the highest success rates in getting students accepted into BS/MD programs. You will work with your counselor, who will help you draft the perfect application. They are typically physicians who have served on an admissions committee, are storytelling experts, enjoy mentorship, and help candidates create a compelling narrative. Our BS/MD admissions consultants also make sure your grammar, tone, and sentence structure are in line with what top programs expect.

How does working with Inspira Advantage give me an edge over other applicants?

Through our vast network of physician advisors and former admissions committee members, we have our finger on the pulse of what’s going on at top BS/MD programs. Every year, our BS/MD admissions consultants meet with admissions committee members from the nation’s top programs to discuss changes in intake criteria, trends, and what experiences schools seek in applicants.

These insights are timely and relevant to benefit you—we use this knowledge to give you the competitive edge you need to stand out. BS/MD programs are extremely competitive, with an average acceptance rate of 3%. Working with our experts exponentially increases your chances of success, with a 98% BS/MD acceptance rate.

How does Inspira Advantage pick its team members?

Approximately 3% of the physician advisors and former admissions committee members we speak with each year are selected to work with us. We want to ensure that our applicants have the best experience, so choosing the right team members is of paramount importance.

We have a rigorous multi-step selection process. This includes personality fit, industry knowledge tests, and multiple real-life case simulations. Every member of our team evaluates the applications of past candidates to help us assess the quality of their insights and communication skills. You can learn more about our selection process here.

We also conduct ongoing evaluations to ensure your counselor is your trusted partner in your journey to BS/MD success. We regularly check in with families and students via reference calls to get unbiased opinions on how our admissions counselors are performing.

image of arrow down

What is your typical consultant-to-client ratio?

Our typical client-to-consultant ratio is 3:1. A smaller pool of students for each counselor ensures you get their undivided attention and maximum effort as you work on your application together. Your success is our topmost priority. If we have to choose between losing a potential client or allocating less time to current clients, we will choose the former any day.

image of arrow down

Can parents be involved in the application process?

Yes, we welcome parent involvement! We understand that applying to BS/MD programs is a crucial step in your child’s journey toward becoming a physician and that parents/guardians are often a crucial part of their support network. Your counselor can keep you up-to-date about your child’s progress.

image of arrow down

How many BS/MD experts will I work with?

Applying to direct medical programs (BS/MD, BA/MD, BS/DO) involves several moving parts and various application documents that must be completed. Students work with one coach to ensure they stay on track with no confusion or stress. The bar is high for these programs, so we want to ensure they have a dedicated coach who will oversee their progress at every step. At Inspira Advantage, your direct medical program coach takes on two roles in one overarching process—your college and medical school admissions expert that you can lean on.

image of arrow down

Which types of direct medical programs do you help students apply to?

We support students applying to BS/MD, BA/MD, combined DO, and early assurance programs. Our team has helped students gain acceptance to the country’s most prestigious direct medical programs, including Brown PLME, Rutgers University, Baylor University, Boston University, Johns Hopkins University, Dartmouth College, and many others.

We specialize in helping applicants navigate direct medical program admissions requirements and cycles.

image of arrow down

Are there limits to how many coaching hours applicants receive while working with Inspira Advantage?

We believe that there should be no time constraints, fear of hours running out, or feeling rushed as students work toward a BS/MD application they can be proud to submit. That’s why we offer unlimited advising hours, email communication, and personal statement and resume edits. Parents and students can rely on our 16+ years of experience in BS/MD admissions consulting to produce the best applications possible.

image of arrow down

What are my chances of getting accepted to a BS/MD program?

BS/MD programs have an average acceptance rate of 3%. However, working with a BS/MD expert who understands what it takes to get accepted and has helped numerous students succeed increases your chances of acceptance to 98%.

image of arrow down

How many BS/MD programs can you help me apply to?

Our all-inclusive BS/MD admissions consulting packages allow students to apply to 20, 25, or 30 BS/MD programs. However, our team can help you build a customized package to align with your goals and needs. If you’re interested in applying to a different number of programs, please discuss your goals during your free consultation.

image of arrow down

Can you help me apply to traditional undergraduate and BS/MD programs?

Yes, we support students applying to both BS/MD and traditional undergraduate programs; however, these count as two separate schools. For example, applying to Brown University’s undergraduate program and the Brown PLME are two separate applications and count for two schools.
