Dr. Hoareau is a board-certified emergency and critical care specialist and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah. He has over 16 years of admissions and coaching experience, including serving on admissions committees at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Emergency and Critical Care residency and the University of Utah School of Medicine, evaluating hundreds of applications and interviewing candidates.

Dr. Hoareau graduated with a DVM from Toulouse National Veterinary School in France before completing a highly competitive internship in medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He then pursued a residency in emergency and critical care at the University of California, Davis, where he later earned a Ph.D. in integrative pathobiology. Dr. Hoareau is board certified by both the American and European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Hoareau has a wealth of experience in both veterinary and medical fields, having served on two admissions committees and mentored numerous candidates into veterinary and medical schools. Dr. Hoareau also has extensive expertise in basic and translational research. As an Associate Professor, he directs translational research in the Department of Emergency Medicine and serves as an investigator at the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute (CVRTI). His research focuses on hemorrhagic shock, cardiac arrest, and mitochondrial pathobiology to develop novel interventions to improve survival from acute and critical illnesses in humans and pets. 

Dr. Hoareau’s research has been recognized through various prestigious awards and grants, including the Clinician Scientist Fellow Award from the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, UC Davis Research and Education in Advanced Clinical Health (REACH) Award, UC Davis William Pritchard Award, and the CASODOM Award, combining clinical expertise with a dedication to improving veterinary practices and outcomes.

During his Ph.D., Dr. Hoareau served as a clinical attending at UC Davis' prestigious Emergency and Critical Care Service, where he trained veterinary interns and residents in one of the top-ranked veterinary emergency programs in the world.
