Dr. Mwangi's academic career began with a full-ride scholarship to Texas A&M Commerce, where he laid the foundation for his medical education. He then earned his MD from Texas Tech Health Science Center School of Medicine, entering as a non-traditional applicant through the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP). Following medical school, he completed his family physician residency at HCA-Houston Healthcare West.
Dr. Mwangi spent three years as a JAMP coordinator, where he provided complementary curriculum support, provided advice to prospective students on the medical school admissions process, and orchestrated ice-breaking activities and team-building exercises to foster morale and social integration.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Mwangi has been committed to supporting his peers and future medical professionals. He served as a peer tutor for multiple courses, including organic chemistry and statistics, demonstrating his ability to break down complex concepts for others. His dedication to advancing medical knowledge is evident in his extensive research experience, including serving as an oncology research assistant for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. His research work has resulted in multiple publications. He has also been involved in significant volunteer work, including organizing free blood pressure screenings, CPR training, and providing food bank support to local communities in need.
As a member of the HCA-Houston Healthcare West residency admissions committee, Dr. Mwangi has gained a comprehensive understanding of the selection process. This experience informs his holistic approach to mentorship and admissions counseling. He thoroughly reviews each individual's entire application—from their experiences and scores to their background. His goal is to pinpoint each person's story, ensuring that every aspect of their application is considered. He understands the importance of highlighting one's experiences and background in creating a compelling application.
