As an admissions committee member at Midwestern University, Dr. Avezova reviewed hundreds of applications, interviewed prospective students, and facilitated admissions tours as a student ambassador. At UCLA, she advised pre-dental students and reviewed applications, giving her deep insight into what competitive dental schools seek in strong candidates. Throughout her career, she has combined clinical practice, academic research, and student mentorship to guide future generations of dentists. Today, Dr. Avezova practices in both private clinics and federally qualified health centers, with additional expertise in teledentistry, peer review, and consulting.
At UCLA, Dr. Avezova’s research in tumor immune surveillance, biomarker profiling of oral squamous cell carcinoma, and evidence-based dentistry led to multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Bioinformation and The Open Dentistry Journal. She was awarded the Van Trees Scholar distinction, and presented her work at the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).
In dental school, she was awarded the Oral Biology Award by the American Association of Oral Biologists and completed a prestigious fellowship with the Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program, where she lectured on dental anatomy and further developed her teaching skills. Throughout her dental school experience, Dr. Avezova contributed to the local chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) with leadership roles as a Legislative Liaison for the Executive Counsel, Editor-in-Chief for the electronic blog, and Publications Chair for the quarterly newsletter. Additionally, she volunteered her time with the Give Kids a Smile Program, where she provided comprehensive dental care to pediatric patients in the community.
Beyond academics, Dr. Avezova has held numerous leadership roles in organized dentistry. She was voted into several positions throughout the last decade, including Zone Director, CDA Delegate, Executive Board Vice President, and ultimately President/Chair of the Board. She has participated in or chaired several committees, including the New Dentist Committee, Membership Committee, Governance Task Force, and the Allied Dental Health Scholarship Review Committee. On a state level, Dr. Avezova has held several roles in the California Dental Association, including the Board Composition Workgroup, the Leadership Development Committee, the Leadership Discovery Program, and the House of Delegates. She is also a Dental Assistant Advisory Board member and Oral Health Representative for the San Gabriel Unified School District Wellness Council.
Along with her extensive expertise in the dental field, Dr. Avezova has experience in teledentistry, dental consulting, independent medical review, and peer review. Her contributions to the profession were recognized with induction into the International College of Dentists, an honor given to only 3% of dentists nationwide.
Dr. Avezova has always been passionate about student mentorship and guiding the next generation of dentists. She has hosted lectures for Health Occupations Students of America, advised students in the College-to-Career Program through the Riordan Scholars Program at UCLA, and mentored students through the Business Success Program at USC.
As a former academic tutor and student mentor, Dr. Avezova possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve success in the dental school application process. With a detail-oriented and multi-factorial perspective, Dr. Avezova can capture the unique features that make an applicant stand out and help tailor personal statements to those attributes. Dr. Avezova is ready to help guide prospective candidates on their future role in dentistry and how to balance their personal and professional lives.
