Dr. Schnabel earned a BS in biology from Duke University, where she graduated cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. At Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, she received recognition for her surgical skills and dedication to the field of large-animal surgery, earning the A. Gordon Danks Large Animal Surgery Award.
As a veterinarian, Dr. Schnabel began her specialization in equine surgery by completing an internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, followed by a fellowship at Cornell University, where she performed research on regenerative therapies. Dr. Schnabel then went on to complete a large animal surgery residency at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, during which time she won numerous awards, including the Outstanding Clinical Resident Award and the Phi Zeta Manuscript Competition Award.
Following her residency, Dr. Schnabel completed a PhD in comparative biomedical sciences, centering on stem cell immunology at Cornell University, funded by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Comparative Medicine Training Grant. During her PhD training, Dr. Schnabel was awarded a five-year NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Career Development Award (K08) and was also awarded the Cornell University Biological and Biomedical Sciences Graduate Research and Teaching Fellowship, which she completed to further her development and prepare herself for her current academic position at North Carolina State University, consisting of clinical work, research, and teaching.
Since joining the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine Faculty over 12 years ago, Dr. Schnabel has built a national and international reputation as a leader in the fields of equine orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts in addition to numerous book chapters, has delivered over 150 podium presentations, and has received external and internal funding for her research work totaling over $11 million.
Dr. Schnabel is also well known for being an exceptional mentor to the many graduate students, residents, interns, veterinary students, and undergraduate students that she trains. She was named a North Carolina State University Faculty Scholar for her great success in her clinical work, research, teaching, mentorship, and community outreach efforts. She also received the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence and the Ruth L. and Ned E. Hoffman Leadership Award.
Dr. Schnabel’s greatest strengths as an admission consultant lie in her extensive experience in academia, as well as her extensive experience and passion for mentoring the next generation of veterinarians and clinician scientists. Throughout her career, she has advised students of diverse backgrounds and experience levels, including several for whom veterinary medicine was a second career. Dr. Starnes' journey in the field of veterinary medicine began at Marshall University, where she pursued her pre-veterinary education while excelling as a cross-country and track athlete. After graduating from Marshall, Dr. Starnes continued her academic pursuits at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her DVM. During her veterinary studies, Dr. Starnes had several noteworthy experiences that shaped her perspective and deepened her passion for the field. She traveled to Ethiopia to work with natives and improve chicken husbandry, visited the CDC multiple times to learn about One Health, and trained at FEMA's Center for Domestic Preparedness. Additionally, she was awarded the opportunity to work with the West Virginia Department of Public Health on a statewide tick surveillance project that spanned both animal and human health implications, further solidifying her interest in the intersection of veterinary and public health.
After graduation, Dr. Starnes primarily worked in small animal companion medicine. In her early days of practice, she completed the "Power of Ten" leadership training through the WVVMA and was selected to participate in the AVMA's Veterinary Leadership Conference as West Virginia's Emerging Leader.
In addition to her academic and professional responsibilities, Dr. Starnes works one night a week at a veterinary urgent care clinic, serving pets in need, keeping her clinical skills sharp, and staying clinically relevant for technician students. She also enjoys shelter medicine and supporting animal rescues whenever she can squeeze in events. Additionally, she serves as the backup veterinarian for the Marshall University Animal Research Facility and the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center Animal Research Facility.

Dr. Rodriguez went on to the University of South Florida to earn his Master’s degree in anatomy, graduating as the Valedictorian of his class. Afterwards, he chose to attend Albany Medical College. Originally from Ohio, Dr. Talbott graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with a degree in psychology and biology. Her path to medicine included serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay for two years, where she gained experience in community health outreach and public health.
Following her Peace Corps service, Dr. Talbott worked as a clinical research coordinator at the University of Washington, contributing to various projects in general and vascular surgery. This experience, combined with her international service, has given her over four years of domestic and international public health experience.
