Dr. Castro’s early work as an undergraduate research assistant at Florida International University involved single-cell imaging protocols, advanced microscopy, and mass spectrometry, and he later expanded his academic interests during medical school through 10+ poster and oral presentations. Dr. Castro has presented extensively at regional and national conferences, including the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Florida Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Student Osteopathic Medical Association.
Throughout medical school, he developed professional strengths in communication, clinical reasoning, and interdisciplinary teamwork. His clinical interests include neurologic and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, complex medical case management, and academic physiatry. His scholarly work spans rare neurologic disorders, rehabilitation outcomes, electrical burn recovery, cerebrovascular events, and complex inpatient care.
Dr. Castro also demonstrates leadership through innovation and community engagement. His service activities include volunteering with Special Olympics Florida, completing sports physical examinations, and supporting rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. He is also the Founder and Developer of TalkPMR.com, a growing online platform designed to centralize educational resources and professional discussion within the PM&R community. His contributions have been recognized with several honors, including a DEI Mayo Clinic Scholarship and multiple competitive case presentation awards.
Dr. Castro is committed to mentorship and student development. He has guided pre-medical and medical trainees through interview preparation, application strategy, and professional development—drawing directly from his personal experience as an applicant and as an active participant in medical school interview days. Students he has coached have been accepted to medical schools at Nova Southeastern University, the University of the Incarnate Word, and the University of Central Florida. Applicants appreciate his structured, empathetic approach and his emphasis on clarity, confidence, and honest self-reflection.
