Before attending the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Shanmugasundaram graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas on a full scholarship with a BS in biochemistry with Collegium V Honors and a minor in business administration. She worked as a research assistant in the University of Texas at Dallas Developmental Neurolinguistics Laboratory for over three years.
Throughout her academic and professional journey, Dr. Shanmugasundaram has been actively involved in research. She has contributed to multiple projects that have been published in scientific journals, including the American Journal of Medical Genetics, the American Journal of Medical Sciences, Academic Medicine, and others. Her dedication to advancing knowledge in pediatrics and genetics reflects her broader commitment to improving patient care and health outcomes in a niche patient population. Throughout medical school, Dr. Shanmugasundaram was a Senior Fellow at the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, interdisciplinary leadership development program.
Dr. Shanmugasundaram understands how tumultuous, and stressful applying to medical school and residency programs can be. As a result, her mentoring approach is student-centered and grounded in each individual’s lived experience. Her goal is to understand each student’s unique needs, challenges, and circumstances to craft a tailored plan that supports their aspirations. She strives to help students reach their goals with clarity, confidence, and purpose—ultimately working to make their dreams a reality.
