Dr. Schlager earned a BS from the University of Illinois before completing an MS in microbiology and a PhD in immunology at the University of Illinois Medical Center, where he was recognized with the Milan V. Novak Prize in Microbiology. He completed postdoctoral training at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health before earning an MD and completing an internal medicine residency.
Dr. Schlager has extensive experience designing and conducting clinical studies as a liaison to principal investigators and clinical study sites, leading project planning and execution, and supporting regulatory filings across Phase I–IV trials. Over the past decade, he has led teams that successfully filed six New Drug Applications (NDA) or Biologics License Applications (BLA), with therapeutic experience spanning oncology and hematology, cardiovascular disorders, pulmonary diseases, allergy and infectious diseases, gastroenterology, CNS disorders, rare diseases, rheumatology, and biosimilars.
For over 20 years, Dr. Schlager has served as Senior Clinical Director at Therapeutic Window LLC, partnering with pharma/biotech organizations and medical education and communications groups to develop high-quality clinical and scientific content and program structures for live meetings and enduring materials across print, video, and digital media. He has extensive leadership experience in medical affairs, competitive intelligence, business development, pharmacovigilance, and health economics and outcomes research.
Dr. Schlager has mentored trainees at the MS and PhD levels as a graduate student mentor at the University of Notre Dame and brings a structured, practical approach to guiding students through study design, scientific writing, and translating ideas into publishable work. Students he has supported have gone on to programs and institutions including Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Loyola University Chicago, and the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
