Dr. Sangwon Yun, Med School Admissions Consultant at Inspira Advantage

Dr. Yun is a general surgery resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital who earned an MD/PhD from Yale University School of Medicine, where he also served on the admissions committee as an interviewer. With three years of coaching experience, he has helped students gain acceptance to medical schools at Harvard University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Massachusetts, among others.

Before pursuing an MD/PhD, Dr. Yun graduated from Duke University with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. As an undergraduate, he was selected for the University of California, Los Angeles Amgen Scholars Program, a nationally competitive research fellowship that accepts roughly 15 students annually. He was also awarded the Duke University Dean's Summer Research Fellowship to support his early research training.

At Yale University, Dr. Yun completed his MD/PhD training with a dissertation focused on stem cell and cancer cell biology in the Department of Genetics. During his time at the Yale School of Medicine, he served as an interviewer on the admissions committee and took on a mentorship role through the Science, Technology and Research Scholars (STARS) II program, where he guided Yale undergraduates pursuing careers in STEM research. He also worked as a post-graduate health professions personal statement reviewer.

Dr. Yun’s research has been published in numerous prestigious journals, including Nature, eLife, Cell Reports, Science, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. He is a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, and has received the MacMillan Center International Conference Travel Grant and the Society of Investigative Dermatology Travel Award for his scholarly work. During his surgical training, he was named Surgical ICU Intern of the Year at Bridgeport Hospital.

During graduate school, Dr. Yun became passionate about mentoring junior trainees, working closely with them to develop their medical school applications, personal statements, and interview skills. He brings a scientist's rigor and a mentor's care to the coaching process, drawing on his own experience as an admissions interviewer and MD/PhD graduate to help students present the strongest possible candidacy.
