Dr. Kristin Carmody, Med School Admissions Consultant at Inspira Advantage

Dr. Carmody is an emergency medicine physician who earned an MD from the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine, where she graduated at the top of her class. She has 20 years of admissions committee experience, including serving on the admissions committees at the Boston University School of Medicine and the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Carmody has helped students gain acceptance to the medical schools at Columbia University, New York University, Boston University, SUNY Downstate, Stony Brook University, and other schools.

Before attending the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, Dr. Carmody graduated from the New York University Stern School of Business with a degree in accounting and finance. After college, she spent several years working on Wall Street as an associate at Salomon Brothers and J.P. Morgan, where she developed the collaborative instincts and high-stakes composure that would later define her career in medicine. This experience shaped her ability to build meaningful working relationships and strengthened her readiness for a career devoted to patient care and education.

In medical school, Dr. Carmody led initiatives that brought health education directly into local women's shelters, creating and presenting programming for women who lacked access to medical resources and treatment. She completed her emergency medicine residency at SUNY Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center, where she became the Resident Leader of the medical student emergency medicine rotation and was recognized with the Medical Student Education Award from SUNY Downstate for her dedication to teaching. She then completed a fellowship in emergency point-of-care ultrasound at the Yale University School of Medicine, where she discovered her passion for academic medicine and mentorship. During her fellowship, Dr. Carmody authored Handbook of Critical Care and Emergency Ultrasound, which has been translated into multiple languages and continues to be used worldwide.

After completing her fellowship, Dr. Carmody served as Division Director and Fellowship Director of Emergency Ultrasound at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Carmody started the fellowship at Boston University and was instrumental in creating and implementing a new curriculum for the fellows, residents, medical students and faculty. She published multiple research papers, textbooks, case studies and on-line tools during her tenure. She was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from the Boston University School of Medicine because of her departmental and institution-wide teaching and curricular development.

Dr. Carmody returned to NYC and took an academic position at the New York University School of Medicine as the Division Director and Fellowship Director of Emergency Ultrasound. She continued to create curriculum and to participate in teaching and research initiatives across the institution. Much of Dr. Carmody’s curriculum was adopted institution-wide across the medical school, residency and fellowship programs. To advance her expertise in education, she earned a Master's in Health Professions Education through a joint program between the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Maastricht University, graduating at the top of her class with distinction. This degree honed her teaching, research, mentoring, and curriculum building skills. She was then promoted to Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Education Innovation within the Department of Emergency Medicine.

As Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Education Innovation, Dr. Carmody developed formal feedback curricula to establish a formal constructive process of bi-directional feedback between teachers and learners, a mentorship curriculum for both junior faculty and residents, an academic relative value system designed to award teachers for their teaching activities, and a diversity and inclusion curriculum. Her initiatives were implemented institution-wide and earned her the Excellence in Educational Innovation Award from the New York University School of Medicine. She also received the Academic Attending of the Year Award and the Mentor of the Year Award from the Emergency Medicine Residency Program due to her teaching and mentorship initiatives.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Carmody has been heavily involved on national and international committees, many of which have included leadership positions. She served as a leader in such organizations as the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships and the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council. Her work in these groups involved creating and implementing formal society guidelines, teaching materials, and research events. She has received multiple national awards for her accomplishments that highlight her teaching, mentorship, and innovative skills, including the Outstanding Physician of the Year Award, the Excellence in Leadership Award, and the Distinguished Education Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. She was also listed as a top Peer Reviewer from the Annals of Emergency Medicine multiple years in a row due to her excellent editorial reviews of research articles presented to the journal. Dr. Carmody has published extensively across peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, AEM Education and Training, Medical Education, MedEdPORTAL, The Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Annals of Emergency Medicine.
