Before starting medical school, Dr. Painter earned a BS in biology from the University of Richmond. As an undergraduate, he earned numerous awards recognizing both his research and leadership, including the Clarence J. Gray Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Leadership, the William Myers Inorganic Chemistry Award, and the Pinchbeck Prize. He was a mathematics research fellow at the University of Richmond Department of Mathematics for four years and a teaching assistant for the University of Richmond Department of Chemistry.
Before attending medical school, Dr. Painter conducted research on viral pathogenesis at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, serving as a visiting graduate student in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He went on to graduate with an MD from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the Alpert Medical School Summer Research Assistantship grant. Dr. Painter is currently a transitional year resident physician in the St. Clair Health Graduate Medical Education Program, part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, and will complete a categorical diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
An avid researcher, Dr. Painter has published more than 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts, textbook chapters, and abstracts on topics including radiology, sports medicine, medical education, virology, and nephrology. Dr. Painter has been published in multiple prestigious medical journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and the Rhode Island Medical Journal, and many others. He has presented his research at national and international conferences, including the Alpert Medical School of Brown University Research Symposium, the Annual Scientific Sessions of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and the Medical Student Orthopedic Society (MSOS) Annual Meeting.
Dr. Painter has supervised or led 25 research projects and has supported students in research areas such as biostatistics, cell biology, epidemiology, immunology, microbiology, infectious disease, molecular biology, physiology, and integrative biology. Students he has mentored have achieved admission to top law, PhD, and medical school programs at the Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, Wake Forest University, Brown University, and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Painter has demonstrated a remarkable dedication to education and mentorship. While in medical school, he designed and taught multiple science courses for high school and middle school students, including programs through Brown University's Pre-College Programs and The Wheeler School. Dr. Painter’s teaching philosophy emphasizes accessibility, curiosity, and empowerment—helping students see themselves as capable scholars and future professionals.
