Dr. Phil Shin

Before attending Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Shin graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in neuroscience. During his time at Hopkins, he served as a Head Leader for the student-led peer tutoring program in organic chemistry, developing early skills in teaching and academic mentorship that would carry over throughout his training. He was also inducted into the Alpha Phi Omega Phi and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

During medical school, Dr. Shin served on the board of the Student Success Network, a peer-based teaching program at Columbia where he led review sessions for pre-clinical students and helped organize group teaching efforts. He also served as a mentor for the Gerald E. Thomson Undergraduate Pre-Medical Program (GET-UPP), a free pre-medical mentorship initiative at Columbia that supports undergraduate students seeking admission to medical school. 

Dr. Shin is an internal medicine resident at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, training across the health system's main campus and Elmhurst Hospital Center, one of New York City's largest public safety-net hospitals. His clinical training in a diverse, high-volume environment deepened his understanding of the breadth of experiences and pathways that lead to careers in medicine.

Dr. Shin is passionate about coaching because he understands what it feels like to navigate the admissions process, including the uncertainty, the pressure, and the challenge of knowing what matters most. His greatest strength as a coach is bringing structure, clarity, and composure to every stage of the journey. He takes a systematic, organized approach to program selection, narrative development, and timeline planning. Dr. Shin wants every student he works with to leave the process not just with a stronger application, but with a clearer sense of why they are pursuing medicine in the first place.
