Before attending medical school, Dr. Young graduated from Villanova University, where he earned a BS in biology while competing as a nationally ranked sprinter on a four-year track scholarship. During his undergraduate career, he was named an Academic All-American and ranked first in his graduating class in biology. Following medical school, Dr. Young completed his surgical residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital before pursuing an abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Throughout his career, Dr. Young has remained deeply committed to mentorship and medical education. At the University of Alabama, Heersink School of Medicine, he has served as an application reviewer, interviewer, Admissions Selection Committee member, and Admissions Executive Committee member. In these roles, Dr. Young evaluated over 1,000 candidates and interviewed hundreds of applicants. As the former Assistant Dean, he led the Office of Access and Engagement for 13 years.
Dr. Young also has years of experience as a Professor of Surgery and a senior Scientist at UAB. His research has been published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the American Journal of Kidney Disease, and the American Journal of Transplantation, where he has also served as an ad hoc reviewer. Dr. Young has been involved in numerous transplant organizations and has served as Chair of the United Network of Organ Sharing Minority Affairs Committee.
As an admissions coach, Dr. Young is committed to supporting pre-med, medical, and resident students. Drawing from his extensive leadership in admissions and academic medicine, he helps applicants strengthen their personal narratives, refine their interview skills, and develop competitive applications. His mentorship style emphasizes resilience, professionalism, and long-term career growth in medicine.
