Before starting his medical school journey, Dr. Painter graduated with a BS in biology from the University of Richmond. As an undergraduate, he earned numerous awards recognizing both his research and leadership, including the Clarence J. Gray Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Leadership, the William Myers Inorganic Chemistry Award, and the Pinchbeck Prize. He also worked in the University of Richmond Office of Admissions as a high school recruiter.
Before attending medical school, Dr. Painter conducted research on viral pathogenesis at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, serving as a visiting graduate student in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. During medical school, Dr. Painter was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He also served as an interview day tour guide and lunch panelist for prospective medical students.
An avid researcher, Dr. Painter has published more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, textbook chapters, and abstracts on topics including radiology, sports medicine, medical education, virology, and nephrology. Dr. Painter has been published in multiple prestigious medical journals, including the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and the Rhode Island Medical Journal. He has presented his research at national and international conferences.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Painter has demonstrated a remarkable dedication to education and mentorship. While in medical school, he designed and taught multiple science courses for high school and middle school students, including programs through Brown University's Pre-College Programs and The Wheeler School. Dr. Painter’s teaching philosophy emphasizes accessibility, curiosity, and empowerment—helping students see themselves as capable scholars and future professionals. Dr. Painter has mentored and tutored students of all ages, and his mentees have gone on to achieve admission to top medical schools and PhD programs.
