Dr. Patel works at Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she enjoys teaching residents and medical students and caring for a diverse patient population. She enjoys building lifelong relationships with her patients and families and is passionate about education and health advocacy, specializing in menopause, perinatal mental health, and obesity medicine. After residency, Dr. Patel stayed at UTMB as an assistant professor, where she discovered her love for education and quickly became deeply involved in medical student training. She served as Course Director for the endocrine & reproduction course and as an OB/GYN Clerkship Director. In addition to joining the admissions committee, she joined the UTMB Curriculum Committee, where she helped design curricula for all four years of medical school. She has also served as an assistant clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and an assistant professor at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Patel continues her passion for education at Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she serves as the Associate Director of the OB-GYN residency program. In this role, she has fortified the didactic curriculum, incorporated new simulations into resident and student education, created a resident advisory program, and developed an annual oral board-style practice exam to help residents rehearse oral presentation and test-taking skills. She also reviews residency applications, interviews applicants, coaches residents and students in exam preparation and test-taking strategies, and serves on clinical competency committees.
Mentorship has been a constant thread throughout Dr. Patel’s journey. As the oldest in her family and the first to pursue medicine, she began mentoring early—tutoring English and revising essays as a sophomore in college—and continued through medical school, where she supported BS/MD, pre-clinical, and post-baccalaureate students. Her mentorship during residency focused on working with high school and college students locally and through national programs such as the American Medical Women’s Association. Her work with AMWA earned her the Resident Division Outstanding Mentor Award, and she has also received multiple national and institutional awards for teaching, education, and mentorship, including recognized teaching awards.
Students Dr. Patel has mentored have earned acceptances to Drexel University College of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas Medical Branch, Rutgers College of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Long School of Medicine, McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and more. With 16 years of coaching and mentorship experience, Dr. Patel is especially skilled at helping students develop long-term candidacy plans, strengthen academic narratives, and present authentic, mission-driven applications that reflect both achievement and purpose.
