Medical schools are the birthplace of leading scientific discoveries every year. Let’s talk about some cool medical school stats that may surprise you!

As of 2022, there are 155 accredited medical schools in the US. If you don’t get into one, apply for another. There are plenty of fish in the sea!

The University of Washington was ranked the best medical school for primary care in 2022. According to US News, U of Washington beat out other top schools for the title such as Johns Hopkins and Harvard. 

In 2022-2023, Harvard University maintains its rank as the best medical school in the US according to multiple ranking systems, including US News. The ivy school has maintained the top position multiple years in a row and is known worldwide for its medical school.

The medical school with the most students in 2022 was the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, with a total of 2,390 enrolled students. To keep up with the students, the school also has 2,775 full-time faculty on staff.

Med School Admissions Statistics

Here are some of the most shocking medical school admissions statistics for 2022.

During the 2021-2022 admission cycle, 22,666 of the 62,443 students who applied to medical school matriculated into a medical school. That means approximately 36% of medical school applicants were accepted into a program, a number that has decreased over the years, according to data published by the AAMC.

From 2013 to 2022, the number of female medical school applicants has increased from 46.2% to 56.8%. In the 2021-2022 academic year, more women were applying to medical school than men by 13.6%. 

In 2021-2022, Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena, CA, was the hardest medical school to get into, with an admissions rate of only 1.1%. The school was ranked the hardest medical school to get into by US News and outranked heavy hitters such as Stanford and NYU.

The average MCAT score of MD-enrolled medical students in 2022 was 511.9. The highest score possible on the MCAT is 528, though very few people achieve this number each year. 


Medical school statistics are constantly changing. Every year, more students apply for medical school and are faced with the very real challenge of admission. If you have not been accepted to medical school, don’t let it get you down. As mentioned above, only 36% of students are admitted each year. There’s always room to try again!
