Morehouse School of Medicine Requirements

To join this limited percentage of accepted students, here are the Morehouse School of Medicine requirements:

Morehouse School of Medicine GPA Requirements

The first admission requirement for this medical school is to complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university. While Morehouse has no preference for the type of major you pursue, there are several prerequisites you must complete in order to apply to their MD program:

  • Biology With a Lab Component: One full year of studies
  • General Chemistry With a Lab Component: One full year of studies
  • Organic Chemistry With a Lab Component: One full year of studies
  • Physics With a Lab Component: One full year of studies
  • College-level Mathematics: One full year of studies
  • English Including Composition: One full year of studies

Students should aim to have a GPA of around 3.65 in all of these prerequisites and a science GPA of 3.55 to be considered competitive applicants.

Morehouse School of Medicine MCAT Requirements

All applicants are also required to take the MCAT to apply to Morehouse.

For the most recent admission cycle, successful applicants report a median score of 506 on the MCAT. This means that to fall within the accepted range, you should aim to score somewhere in the 503-510 range.

While many schools accept MCAT scores that are up to five years old, MSM will not accept scores that are over three years old. Ensure you write the MCAT within this time frame to avoid any application complications!

Shadowing Experience

Morehouse also requires all of its prospective students to have experience shadowing a physician. While there is no set amount of hours or designation they require, it’s imperative students have enough shadowing experience to understand the roles and responsibilities of a physician.

Letters of Recommendation

While your MCAT and GPA can attest to your academic potential, letters from professors that witnessed your abilities first hand can solidify your candidacy!

Accordingly, MSM requires students to submit three letters of recommendation with their application. At least two letters should be written by professors, preferably from your science courses.

You may submit a fourth letter if you feel it will further substantiate your potential for medical school, but it is not required.

Ensure these letters of recommendation paint you as a stellar student and focus on skills required to excel in medical school, such as your critical and analytical thinking, scientific knowledge, writing, problem-solving, and even the ability to handle criticism - an essential part of medical school.

Morehouse School of Medicine Essays

Aside from the above admissions requirements, students will also have to complete a secondary application that will include certain essay prompts. Since the majority of pre-med students find writing essays daunting, we will cover the prompts you can expect to see and some tips on how to answer them!

Prompt One

Briefly explain the reasons for your selections in the Perceptions of Your Medical Career Section.

How to Answer

While there is no word limit for this essay, you are asked to be brief. As such, you should keep your response to one or two pages long.

In terms of how you want to divide your professional time, you should take Morehouse’s mission statement into consideration. Morehouse mentions education, research, and public policy as important pillars in their teaching philosophy. These should be prioritized as much as patient care in your answer.

Prompt Two

Type a brief statement setting forth the key motivational factors in your decision to apply to Morehouse School of Medicine and any information about yourself you feel would be of interest to the Committee on Admission in the consideration of your application.

How to Answer

You’ll be expected to keep your answer to this prompt relatively short, at around one page long. This answer should be pretty straightforward. Think about what motivated you to join medical school and what kind of doctor you hope to be.

You may want to share a specific experience that inspired you to pursue medicine, or specific populations you hope to work with because of a connection you share with them.

Remember, Morehouse School of Medicine places great emphasis on helping minority and underserved populations, so it would be helpful to include this aspect of their mission statement as a motivational factor to prove your values align with MSM’s.

Morehouse School of Medicine Interview

If you meet all of Morehouse School of Medicine’s requirements, you’ll be invited to interview with the admissions committee. Only about 5% of all applicants are invited to interview each year.

Students will be expected to schedule a virtual interview with faculty members. The interview process will involve an overview of the program and school offerings, a discussion with the Associate Dean of Admissions, information regarding the admission process, and an overview of Morehouse’s commitment to diversity.

To prepare for your interview, you should go over common interview questions. Ensure you don’t memorize your answers because then you’ll seem too robotic. You want to appear prepared yet personable! Wow the committee with your dedication to medicine, accomplishments, and eagerness to join MSM to become an outstanding physician.

Keep MSM’s missions in mind and don’t be afraid to ask your own questions! Asking questions will show your genuine interest in Morehouse.
