Other MCAT Costs

The MCAT test cost is not the only expense to take into account. The registration fee can often be the lowest cost for students. Considering the cost of additional MCAT costs like prep materials, tutoring, travel, etc. The cost of the MCAT can add up for medical school hopefuls.

MCAT Prep Costs

While many low-cost or free MCAT test prep materials are available, students may prefer to invest in more reputable programs. There is no set limit on MCAT Prep costs, and options can range from free to thousands of dollars. It is not unusual for MCAT prep costs to exceed $2000-3000.

Students should research the cost of MCAT prep when considering how much the MCAT will cost. Reviewing the free MCAT prep materials available before booking your test will help give you a sense that it is sufficient for your needs. You may find that you prefer to invest in prep materials.

AAMC offers an MCAT Official Prep Hub where those registered can purchase prep materials or download free materials. It offers multiple low-cost options as well as free planning and study resources. Those approved for the Fee Assistance Program can access free resources in the official prep hub.

MCAT Tutoring Cost

MCAT prep materials usually do not cover the cost of tutoring. It will be an additional expense to add to the MCAT cost. We offer personalized MCAT tutoring from tutors in the 99th percentile.

Most prep test materials, especially free or low-cost, will not include tutoring or guidance. Some test prep bundles may offer materials along with tutoring. These programs will add significantly to your MCAT test costs. Test prep bundles are often organized like a course.

There are MCAT courses available, both in-person and online. These will generally be significantly less expensive than private tutoring, which can cost thousands of additional dollars. Students may find that classroom tutoring does not address their individual needs, so that private tutoring may be worth the investment.

MCAT online courses can be done from anywhere, offering flexibility to students. However, it may come with the same cons as classroom prep programs in that it does not address the needs of the individual. Students will primarily work from test prep materials and meet with other registered students through video conferences.

Students must take their exam at an MCAT test center location. There are available throughout the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories worldwide. Each location only administers tests on predetermined dates, which are available for reference on the AAMC website. Travel to the locations may be required.

For example, there are only 12 testing locations in New York. There will be many students from around the state, and likely surrounding states, who will need to travel to the most convenient location. This travel will be an additional MCAT test cost.

Apart from the transportation to the testing site, whether by plane, train, or car, some students will have no choice but to book accommodations. Especially for those from rural areas, overnight accommodations may be necessary.

Consider the cost of meals for the duration of the rip in addition to transportation and accommodations. Students traveling greater distances should arrive the night before to ensure that delays do not interfere with their arrival at the test center at least 30 minutes early.

Students and residents who cannot afford to pay the MCAT test cost without financial assistance can apply for the Fee Assistance Program. This program was designed to assist those who cannot otherwise pay to apply to medical school.

Students must apply for the benefit and await approval before booking a test date. Once approved, the initial MCAT registration cost of $320 will be reduced to $130. Students will pay that initial $130 reduced fee as registration for the assistance program. The fee covers the MCAT test cost.

Those accepted will receive benefits in addition to the reduced registration fee. This will include MCAT test prep materials and fee waiver of AMCAS fee for up to 20 medical school submissions.
