Dr. Dennis Youngblood, Dental School Admissions Consultant at Inspira Advantage

Dr. Youngblood is a retired oral and maxillofacial surgeon with over 30 years of experience across private practice, insurance, entrepreneurship, and academia. A graduate of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, he trained in Los Angeles to focus on trauma care. He later served as Assistant and Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was the Dental Director at LECOM’s Outreach Center, overseeing fourth-year clinical instruction.

Dr. Youngblood began his higher education journey at Morehouse College before matriculating at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. Early in dental school, Dr. Youngblood concluded that he would pursue dental surgery as a specialty. He concentrated his efforts on being a top student, scoring well on his national boards and spending as much time as possible in the surgery department, gaining experience in the specialty. While performing didactic and clinical duties, he also served on the admissions committee for five years. During his time in admissions, Dr. Youngblood evaluated over 1,500 applications and interviewed hundreds of applicants.

He was also a member of the Student Promotions and Retention Committee, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, the National Student Dental Association, and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Group. Dr. Youngblood went on to complete his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, King/Drew Medical Center.

After residency, Dr. Youngblood spent a year in Los Angeles practicing until he moved back home to Texas and opened his private practice in his hometown of Dallas. As the only African American oral surgeon in Dallas at the time, he participated in organized dentistry and surgery as a member of the Dallas County Dental Society, MC Cooper Dental Society, Texas Dental Association, Gulf State Dental Society, North Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and many non-profit efforts, including Habitat For Humanity, Big Brother and Sisters, and The Enterprise Foundation.

After a couple of years in private practice, Dr. Youngblood opened a second practice where he employed three other surgeons. In addition, he served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry for a decade. After leading successful surgery practices, he opened his own dental service organization, growing it to six multi-specialty practices, independent of the two surgery practices. While leading these multi-specialty practices, he founded a discount dental health plan.

After selling the multi-specialty company, including the dental plan, Dr. Youngblood established a discount health plan in the Philippines, India, and Mexico. In each case, the company was developed from the model that he created. After commuting internationally for several years and selling his interest in each of the companies, Dr. Youngblood returned to academia full time.

After serving as the Dental Director of LECOM School of Dentistry Outreach Center, Dr. Youngblood was asked to take charge of the first, second, and third-year oral surgery, pharmacology, anesthesia, and pathology lectures. Additionally, he was the primary clinical specialist for all oral surgery and pathology patient care.

Students Dr. Youngblood has coached have been accepted to many of the nation’s top dental schools, including Baylor University, Texas A&M University, NYU, the University of Florida, Howard University, Ohio State University, and many others. He has much experience in helping prospective dental students write and edit compelling personal statements and practice their skills with mock interviews.

With broad education, business, entrepreneurship, and academics, Dr. Youngblood brings a depth and breadth of knowledge that can be instrumental in the success of future dental students and dentists.
